It is always interesting to see a history of sandals manufacturer, and this time it’s a bit more unusual story. Havaiana sandals come from Brazil and are inspired by Japanese sandals that came to that country long time ago. In 1907, simple and inexpensive sandals called Alpargatas arrive in Brazil. They looked nothing like today, they were completely closed and used by coffee collectors. And since there were many of them in Brazil, one factory emerged to produce them in hundreds. Some 55 years after that, Japanese flip-flops inspire designers from Alpargatas plant to produce different version then Japanese Zori’s sandals. There was one difference – it was made out of rubber. Durable, cheap and comfortable Havaiana sandal is born.

Just 3 years later, there were plenty of those sandals being sold across the stores. About one thousand pair were being sold and there were even some competitors who made imitations of Havaianas sandals. But there was a marketing campaign that distinguished them from those imitators in 1970.

Company had success and was growing each year, until early 90’s. Then, crisis for Havaiana sandals came. To overcome it, the Havaianas brand launches a single-color sandal: Havaianas TOP. Supported by good marketing strategies, this sandal wins over the upper classes and breaks a fantastic results in a history of Havaiana sandals. As the brand was being revived, Havaianas were declared as an elegant and unique product on the market. Magazine ads started to reach out to previously unexplored segment of the public, striking another great punch.

In the time of World Soccer Cup, Havaianas Brazil are launched and new lines and styles continue to expand the Havaianas sandal family. Celebrities start wearing them, top models too, and there was nothing that could stop them in the year of 2000. Export is growing to the roof and Havaiana sandals cover the pages of the top fashion magazines across the world. They appear in the most coveted display windows, becoming a standard accessory at events such as the Sao Paulo fashion week.

Havaiana sandal is worn by all personalities – from the average citizens to dignitaries and world known celebrities. Since being introduced to the US seven years ago, Havaianas have created some kind of cult following. They are now referred to as the best rubber sandal in the world, believe it or not.
